Alcanada Ready For The Rush
Club de Golf Alcanada is ready to capitalise on golf’s boom.

With so many of the other usual leisure activities unavailable over the past 12 months, participation numbers have grown across Europe with new golfers taking up the sport for the first time and others returning to it.

Travel restrictions, which meant passenger numbers to Mallorca were down by a staggering 80-per-cent during 2020, should begin to ease over the coming weeks and months, while the island’s warm climate makes for an appealing autumn golf trip for those golfers who have been bitten by the bug on their home turf.

Director of golf, Kristoff Both, said: “Golf seems to be experiencing a boom so we’re hoping to benefit from this in the long run.

“Although we have had very few international guests, we’ve seen a pick-up in new players and more participation in tournaments on the island.

“We have our members and the golfers on the island playing the course, which is in fantastic condition. But there are a lot of people who will be eager to start travelling again and will want to treat themselves when they can, whether that is in the summer or later in the year.

“So it feels like we are all in the starting blocks and we’re ready to run. We’re hoping that there are a lot of people out there thinking the same and the moment we’re all told we can start welcoming our international friends again, we will be ready.

“We hope the autumn season will be busy this year. The weather is still fantastic here up until mid-November and it’s still sunny – 20-25 degrees.”

Alcanada is widely regarded as one of the best courses in Spain with spectacular panoramic sea views over the Alcudia Bay towards its iconic picturesque lighthouse. Measuring 6,499 metres and boasting 18 beautiful, yet challenging, holes, the Robert Trent Jones Jnr-designed layout is the only one on the island by the sea and is a must for any golfer.

Surrounded by pine and olive groves throughout, the course is regularly rated among Europe’s top 100 layouts and is a great test for golfers of all abilities, from beginners to professionals. This was shown when it was selected as the host venue for the European Challenge Tour Grand Final in November 2019.

And it will provide the venue for ambitious professionals once again after the recent announcement as the host of the final of the PGA EuroPro Tour (October 20-22, 2021).

Both said: “It’s always an honour to host professional events and we received so much positive feedback after the Challenge Tour grand final in 2019. It’s more experience and exposure for us and keeps us in the minds of golfers and officials as an elite professional tournament venue.”
